Online betting action heating up on MLB futures as the 2020 baseball season nears.
All of the top online sportsbooks have reported a major uptick in bets taken on baseball futures throughout the month of June. At DraftKings it’s the Yankees who are the most bet on team to win the World Series in both handle and total bets. Other contenders including the Dodgers, Mets, Phillies and Reds are also seeing large portions of the bets and handle backing them to win it all in 2020.
AL and NL league splits paint a picture of public and sharp favorites.
The league splits tell a similar story. The Yankees lead in both percentage of bets and handle to win the American League. A whopping 56% of the money at DK is backing the Bronx Bombers to go to the World Series as well as nearly half of the total bets on the AL Winner market. The Rays look like the sharpest play with 20% of the handle vs only 7% of the total bets. Then there are the Chicago White Sox who have risen to the number 3 spot with 9% of the handle and 11% of the total bets.
In the National League it is the Dodgers looking like a favorite with both sharps and public bettors. 55% of the money and 20% of the total bets backing LAD. This tells a story of both pros and joes’ betting on the dodgers as well as the Mets. NYM currently holds 18% of the handle and 15% of the total bets.
Harper, Acuna, Alonso and Torres drawing tons of MVP action.
MVP bets have also quickly risen throughout June, making NL and AL MVP two of the most popular markets on the board. Bryce Harper is #1 in both handle and total bets to win the NL MVP at DraftKings Sportsbook. With Ronald Acuna Jr. and Pete Alonso also seeing large shares of the action.
In the AL MVP betting race it’s Gleyber Torres at the top of both handle and bets, with a lot of disparity as you move down the list. For example, Mike Trout is the second most bet player to win the AL MVP, but he ranks 7th in handle indicating that the sharp bettors are not taking Trout.
